Leonardo da Vinci : Saint John the Baptist

Leonardo da Vinci – Saint John the Baptist

Circa 1516-7 – The Louvre, Paris

Painted while at Amboise in France, this is thought to be Da Vinci’s final picture. John, his index finger raised heavenwards, appears to have emerged from darkness into the Divine Light. The androgynous face and body are lit from one source, giving a three dimensional appearance to the portrait.

It is one of my favourite Leonardo paintings.
